My name is Patrick Aneto, am a Nigeria, graduated from the University of Nsukka, I read Creative art, am also into photography which is also an aspect of art. When I left school, I created Silicone studios which eventually became the Crown Multimedia. Growing up , art was like my first and second nature , I was different from every member of my family, I am third in the family of eight , there was something strange about me because I was alone, I never socialize , I had a very poor social life, I have so many friends who are artistes, I believe there is need to convert that energy into a particular thing , but as for me it was different because the energy I possess was too over whelming for me, twenty-four hours would not be enough for me to get things done.
Sometimes, I may be writing stories at the same time painting, and at the same time drawing. I am an embodiment of all this energy which I can’t really explain, you see I am not happy about this, though I am grateful to God for blessing me with varying talents, but I would have preferred to have one, so that I can focus, focus is the key word here. I write stories, there are times I think am a strong writer and I don’t want to do any anything apart from that and then when I do music the same thing happens. I have won several awards like (NMVCA) award, the Nigeria Music Video Award 2011; I won the best divisional music artiste.
Different people look at me and say he is a musician, and others say he is a photographer, others argue no, a film maker. If people are confused concerning issues like this, you can imagine the kind of activities going on in my little mind, so you can’t find me at any point in time not having anything to do. That resulted in my ability to socialize with people, like going to clubs etc. I believe 24hours is not enough for me to do so many different tasks I would need to perform due to the kind of person I am.
It is important for people to focus on a particular task than doing so many because you would not have time to perfect a particular one. I mean you do not bring ideas on your own, you might be driving home and then an idea hits you, might be in a sleep a song hits you and you found yourself writing while every other person is sleeping, then why are you awake? You woke up because something woke you up, some artiste are like that, they may be in the shower, and then a song hits them and you don’t want to lose the lyrics coming in, I have found myself in that situation before.
Art is a vehicle for the dissemination of information, at some point in my life I got involve in global warming and climatic change, getting people to understand the effects of how man relates to nature, the environment hazards it brings if some certain things are done in a wrong way, do you know each tree that you are cutting it take 30 years for one to grow and someone walks in and cut it? What about environment pollution caused by carbon monoxide emission from cars which builds up affecting the atmosphere resulting in the greenhouse effect. I came up with a particular song …” OH WATER”, which was the song that got me the award, because I found out that we suffer a lot of desertification, desert encroachment in the northern part of the country. So, I came up with a song in collaboration with an Hausa artiste which was done in pidgin but translated into Hausa language by the Hausa artiste, I wanted everyone to hear it from the tracks the implication of felling of the trees, the effect of the wind storm on the environment. How else am I supposed to tell everyone? So, art became my tool, I came up with music, I say for me it was just an award, I felt bad about it, people left the message for the rhymes, I feel that it was not enough so I turn to photography and came up with “RETURN TO EDEN”. I brought models, natural models without makeup to the studio bought light flowers, when nature is taken into consideration by man, nature will also respect the boundary of man and there would be a balance in the structure of the ecosystem, once there is distribution you are pushing nature to react.
Art is like a message, it’s like a prophet sent to deliver a message, and it does not compromise such calling for as little as money, though money is important without it you can’t do anything you can’t produce. You must know your mission here on earth, even if you have money make an impact so by the time you leave you would had made history.
When I move into photography I thought about how can I be different from any other person that handle camera, I was asked what do you study in school, I replied I studied painting and I was asked how can you paint with a camera that sound ridiculous, how can someone paint with a camera? I tried so many things with the camera, just wanted to create something out of the ordinary. There was a day I strolled at night to take a night shot at old Onipanu at Lagos, I slowed down the speed of my camera to as about 30 seconds, I realized the view that came was amazing, I came back to the studio to work on it, I called in someone to hold the camera for me, I didn’t give the camera too much exposure, after the whole process I started perfecting it until I was able to create from just with the camera lens open.
I travelled to South Africa to present the work at the University of Pretoria; a white man saw it and said what this is? You know when people asked you some certain questions, it sends a message that they have not seen anything like it before. They are confused asking if it was a graphic, painting or photography? I told them this is Art. I have submitted it for several awards and have won some of them, I was happy because I was able to create something unique and different.
In creativity it’s the restlessness that exist in the mind or the heart of any artiste, curiosity that is where it all starts you have to be curious, you need to ask questions, what really happen? It is the curiosity that makes you an artist, understanding it better than an ordinary person. As an artist, I bring in my creativity the same thing I do in my studio with my camera, I know where light bounces the interaction of light, that is where I am different, we do not create out content sake, you create it for a purpose. Shadow is as important as light, it’s like saying the truth and lying at the same time, you can never appreciate the truth if there is no lie, likewise there is a reason God has not destroyed the devil, because he brings God out of situation, you can’t run to God if there is no devil, so you are able to appreciate good if someone is bad. For instance, I came up with a TV show called ‘’BOYS CAN COOK’’ it was my idea and we don’t have that kind of money to really execute the idea but we have to be creative here, I went shopping for furniture’s and also got other needed materials by the time we were done, people started commenting, how did you do it and I told them it was creativity.
Art bridges the past and the present like Fela Anikulapo kuti, who sang a song ‘’ who kill Baba?’’ and ‘’ Who kill Dele?’’ so, you will wonder as a child who is baba? And who is Dele? So, if you listen to the lyrics you will understand that there was a journalist named Dele Giwa, he died of undisclosed reasons. Art rules everything in the society i.e. Radio art, Media art even the food we eat is Art, art is life. Someone like Fela Anikulapo kuti, though he is dead but people still feel his struggle, he died based on what he believes in. History recorded it for us, without it we might not be able to remember it. So, it was documented and that is the same thing painting does.
Currently I have a project am working on, my earlier idea which I am bringing into reality, still “BOYS CAN COOK’’. I looked at myself because everything that happens in life is funny, boys can cook is a reality tv show that entertains people by showcasing the attitude of boys when called to cook in the kitchen, it further explains the stress women go through, to prepare all those lovely meals we love and also complain about. So many people have showcase themselves on the show, there was a time we brought in someone to prepare coconut rice, the guy sliced the coconut and poured it inside the rice and I asked him…what are you doing? And he replied me this is coconut and this is rice and combining to make coconut rice. It was funny though; the project has given us revelation that only few guys know how to cook. The boys can cook project is going far, a whole lot of celebrities had appeared on the show, celebrities like: Omo baba, Kunle Afod, Denrele Edun and a lot of them. We have high work of content, so right now we are working on the release which is coming soon. I love God, God inspires me, I believe most of any idea I don’t think I can make them up if not for God. I love artist and their work, about a few months ago a friend of mine, had an exhibition, I went there and I saw a painting, I liked it, some artist doesn’t have that rule of getting or paying for others peoples work, excepts the one they exchange. But I saw that painting I liked and I bought it. And there are other artistes that are collectors, I can’t count the number of time I had purchase other paintings aside my own collections.
My advice for upcoming art director is originality, being original that is the only way people can celebrate you, because, photocopy can never look as same as the original. When you are creative that is when it will take you to the inner circle where great people will celebrate you.
