My name is Egbomuche Okechukwu Geoffrey, my stage name is Okechuks, am a musician, I studied computer science, I am a true believer in God, you may not necessary call me a religious person, I am a great worshipper when it comes to worshiping. I have been singing for a while, so far so good music has been great, it has really expose me to so many things.
I participated in Nigerian IDOLS 2013, I was among the top thirteen, and it wasn’t easy from the audition to the final selection stage which had fifty contestants. Nigerian IDOLS was quite an experience and it has also helped me as an artiste to rediscover myself. Initially, I never knew I will go this far in music, it started with singing in the church. The turnaround for me was when I went for Nigeria Idol in 2013, then I was in two hundred levels in school, by 2013 after the Nigeria Idol TV show, I realized I could do more in music.
People usually qualify success for all kinds, including material things but for me it depends on the lives you have touched. When I see people passionate about what I am doing or my fellow singers commenting me, it motivates me a lot and also my family has been my backbone, I am appreciating them for that. It gives me joy to see someone I taught doing well musically; I smile when I see the message I pass on has been received correctly, through that I have a sense of fulfillment. A lot of things can get anybody angry, as a teacher, I spend most of my time teaching, one of the thing that get me upset is when you spend so much time teaching music and at the end the person take in nothing from all your effort, but still I find time to talk to them by knowing which areas challenges is arising from through a one on one conversation and I try as much as possible helping them any ways I can.
I do good music and inspirational songs, recently my debut single came out, the title of the song is “LIGHT” it was very easy for me to do this because constant practice has helped a lot. Practice in every profession is very important depending on what you are looking at. My current project at hand has to do with my music, the debut single “LIGHT” and my other seven tracks, it is not an album per say, but I am putting them out for people to get to know more about me and my music. By the grace of God, it would be ready soon.
In the relationship aspect, I like hardworking woman, an independent woman, yes beauty is an added advantage but I don’t think it should be all, intelligence is also important; I need someone who will buy into my vision. I love beauty with brain. For now, am not searching because I need to focus.
As a bachelor it has not been easy especially when you are living in Nigeria although it has been great, but I support hard work because I am able to work hard so I can live a good life. During my leisure, I sleep, or probably watch a movie, because I barely have time to rest that is how it works for me. I am also a music director in my church where I worship. I love listening to soul music generally R&B, gospel R&B with good content song that has good messages. Some people actually don’t know that I can dance and act; they know me right from time as a musician, so it took them by surprise.
We have so many good artistes here in Nigeria and ASA is one of the artiste I would love to work with. I don’t listen to stereo type Nigeria music; I listen to music with good message and creativity. I listen to BEZ because he is a great singer. When singing you have to tune your vocal cord then your stomach have to be open, as a musician you have to sing from the stomach, same thing applies to breathing, we breathe from the stomach not from the chest. As a singer it is good for you to listen to your fellow singers for you to know which note to sing in.
I want to be a vessel that passes out message to the people while acting or singing or other platforms as long as the message touches and influence people. In five years’ time I want someone to walk up to me and say to me, thank you for teaching me what I never knew before, I want to see myself giving out speech in motivating and advising upcoming musician to believe in their dreams. I see myself going to music school and most importantly impacting lives.
My advice to young and upcoming music artistes is to work hard, believe in themselves and they should back It up with prayer and they should try and be informed academically and musically.
